Tiong Bahru Market

Tiong Bahru market, Singapore
This is a sketch of the very busy jui kueh (rice cake) stall at the famous Tiong bahru market. The 2 red paper pineapples were probably hung for good luck sake.

Block 77 Seng Poh Road, Tiong Bahru

Block 77 Seng Poh Road, Singapore
I wanted to capture some of the old and unique window and door grill designs from the old Tiong bahru estate.

Block 71 Seng Poh Road, Tiong bahru

Block 71 Seng Poh Road, Singapore
Me and 2 fellow sketchers were sketching this block very quickly because we were being attacked by lots of insects. I can't help but scratch my legs and sketch at the same time. Next time we learn not to sit on the grass to draw. And lots of insect repellent.

Now i am contemplating whether or not to add some colours to create some highlights.

Kelvin's house & KK washing his car @ Tiong Bahru

Kelvin's house @ Tiong Bahru 2, Singapore
Dropped in again to sketch my friend kelvin's house while he and a group of friends were watching a Agatha Christie murder mystery. I just like the randomness of his art collection and furniture. This is what I call organised mess.

KK washing his car, Tiong bahru
We chanced upon KK, our fellow adjunct lecturer busy taking care of his 20 year old vintage car. He also lives in the charming Tiong Bahru estate. He was very kind to pose for us as we sketched.

Waraku 'My Curry' Restaurant, Singapore

Waraku @ Central, Singapore
I did a quick sketch at this interesting Japanese restaurant which serves many many types of curries. The interior was full of kitchen utensils and cooking equipment. The colour and washes were added after I got home.

Club Street, Singapore

Club Street, Singapore
I used my new 'Peranakan Brown' Noodler's ink made specially for Singapore for this sketch. The brownish-green works well for old shop-houses like these.

Art Friend, Singapore

Art Friend, Singapore
Art Friend has been around for as long as I can remember and all design or art student in Singapore will definitely know this place. I have been visiting them for 20years since my life as a design student. Brings back fond memories of buying art materials and rushing to finish projects.

My sketching tools

My sketching tools, originally uploaded by Paul SG.

These are some of my frequently used sketching tools. I have a soft spot for buying more art materials than I really need. They are just so enticing.

Zig Artist Sketching Pen and Rotring felt tip pens (0.2 & 0.3) are my favourite. Permanent black ink so very helpful when I want to lay over some washes.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, originally uploaded by Paul SG.
A short weekend getaway. Sat at this very busy junction to admire and sketch this streetscape. This area is called STARHILL or Bukit Bintang and is a high energy shopping section. Perfect way to shop and see local life.

* This is my first time sketching across two pages. Took a solid 1 hour to finish. Very tired when I finished.

The Ice Cream Gallery, Singapore

The Ice Cream Gallery, Singapore, originally uploaded by Paul SG.

Busy eating my vanilla ice cream loaded with liquored cherries while sketching. They make some unusual and yet wonderful ice cream flavours. Nice way to end the night.

Dinner Time at the coffee shop, Singapore

Walked into this very local coffee shop near home for a quick bite. Ordered a plate of plain rice topped with stirred fried vegetables, fish and tofu.
